The State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío, presided today at the Marqués de Salamanca headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, together with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Spain, Lim Soosuk, over the presentation of the logo commemorating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Republic of Korea.
The Spanish State Secretary and South Korea’s highest representative in Spain both highlighted the achievements made in these 75 years of Spanish-Korean political, economic and cultural cooperation, including close collaboration in the multilateral sphere.
On the occasion of this celebration, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and his South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul, exchanged letters of congratulations on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In his message, Minister Albares highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries, based on shared values, mutual respect and constantly growing political, economic and cultural cooperation.
In recent years, Spain and the Republic of Korea have strengthened ties through high-level exchanges, such as the State trips of Their Majesties the King and Queen in 2019 and the President of Korea in 2021, the President of the Government’s official trip in 2022, and those planned for this year to commemorate the 75th anniversary, including on the occasion of the long-awaited opening of the Cervantes Institute in Seoul, which will take relations in the cultural field and the promotion of Spanish to another level.
In economic terms, bilateral trade has surpassed pre-Pandemic levels and Korean investments in Spain are increasing, especially in the electric vehicle battery sector. Albares recognises that tourism and relations between the two peoples, based on genuine attraction between our respective cultures, including their most modern and contemporary manifestations, provide the best evidence of our dynamic relationship.
Members of the Human Rights Council
On the global stage, Spain and the Republic of Korea remain firmly committed to an order based on international law and multilateralism. Both countries reject Russian aggression against Ukraine and threats to international peace and security emanating from North Korea, while defending human rights in all international fora as members of the Human Rights Council, of which both countries are currently members.
Both Spain and the Republic of Korea have a common vision on development cooperation, which will be reflected this year at the International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville in late June.
Through his message to the Republic of Korea, Albares hopes that, in the coming years, these relations will continue to strengthen, contributing to a future of prosperity and cooperation to benefit both nations and the international community.
